Seasonal Maintenance and Decoration Guidelines for Winter

As the seasons change, our care for each resting place continues. Here’s what families should know about winter decorations and maintenance across our cemeteries.
Caring for Our Grounds and the Memories They Hold
As winter approaches, our team begins seasonal preparations to ensure all Buffalo Catholic Cemeteries remain safe, beautiful, and accessible for families visiting loved ones. We understand how meaningful it is to decorate graves and memorials, and we take great care to balance those personal touches with the upkeep needed through the colder months.
If you’re planning a visit during this time, you can review current cemetery hours and visiting guidelines to help plan your trip.
Decoration Timelines
Winter decorations are permitted beginning November 15 and may remain in place until March 15, weather permitting. After this date, staff will begin a gradual cleanup to prepare for spring maintenance.
Families wishing to keep their decorations are encouraged to remove them before the cleanup period begins.

Guidelines for Decorations
To preserve the dignity and safety of all our cemeteries, we ask that decorations follow these simple guidelines:
- Artificial wreaths, blankets, or arrangements are welcome during the winter season.
- Please avoid glass containers, loose objects, or items that may be damaged by snow removal.
- Natural greens are permitted but should be securely fastened.
Ground Maintenance Through the Seasons
Even during the quiet months, care and upkeep continue. Here’s how our maintenance teams preserve the grounds year-round.

Snow and Ice Management
Our crews monitor cemetery roads and walkways regularly throughout the winter. Priority is given to main entrances and frequently visited areas to maintain accessibility. We use methods that protect both visitor safety and the long-term health of our grounds.
Preparing for Spring
When weather allows, we begin clearing winter decorations and debris, checking headstones for stability, and preparing soil and landscaping for seasonal planting. This careful transition helps ensure the cemeteries remain peaceful, welcoming, and cared for once spring arrives.
